COL FB: USC 28, Michigan 14

PASADENA, Calif., Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Matt Leinart accounted for four touchdowns Thursday to give USC a 28-14 Rose Bowl win over Michigan and a likely share of the national title.

The USC quarterback threw for three scores and caught a touchdown pass from star flanker Mike Williams as the top-ranked Trojans finished the season at 12-1.

USC was voted No. 1 in both the media and coaches polls prior to the bowl season. The Trojans should finish No. 1 in the media poll, but the coaches are obligated to declare the winner of Sunday night's Sugar Bowl between Oklahoma and LSU to be the national champ.

Despite being voted No. 1 in the human polls, the Trojans were third in the BCS ratings that determined the teams playing in the Sugar Bowl.

Leinart was 23 of 34 for 330 yards without an interception. Michigan's Chris Perry, Doak Walker Award winner as the nation's top rusher, gained 89 yards on 23 carries.
