Green suspension extended

CLEVELAND, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- The NFL Tuesday extended the suspension of Cleveland Browns running back William Green for treatment purposes under the league's substance abuse policy.

Green was suspended for four games last month and was eligible to be reinstated on Monday. However, with Tuesday's announcement, the NFL's reinstatement of Green will be determined by commissioner Paul Tagliabue in consultation with the program's medical experts.

Green, who has 142 carries for 559 yards and a touchdown, was arrested October 27 and charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence and marijuana possession. He was suspended by the NFL on November 8.

On November 19, Green also was allegedly stabbed with a knife by Asia Gray, his girlfriend and the mother of his two daughters. She has pleaded innocent to charges of felonious assault and domestic violence.

Green told police that the injury was accidental, that he tripped while walking up stairs.

The Browns (4-8) lost three of the four games without Green and are tied with Pittsburgh (4-8) for last place in the AFC North.
