Agassi wins to clinch No. 1 for Roddick

HOUSTON, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Andre Agassi defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero at the Tennis Masters Cup Wednesday night, making Andy Roddick the big winner of the evening.

Agassi's three-set victory over Ferrero in the round-robin phase of the tournament assured Roddick of the season-ending No. 1 ranking.

"I'm incredibly honored to finish the year as No. 1," said Roddick, who did not play Wednesday. Ferrero had been the only player with a chance to overtake Roddick.

Roddick is the first American to hold the year-end top spot since Agassi did in 1999.

The fifth-ranked Agassi rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Ferrero to move to 1-1 in the Blue Group. He still has a chance to make the semifinals.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Roger Federer defeated David Nalbandian earlier in the day, 6-3, 6-0, to improve to 2-0.
