Browns waive Kevin Johnson

CLEVELAND, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- In a surprise move Tuesday, the Cleveland Browns waived wide receiver Kevin Johnson.

The second-round draft pick in the draft of the Browns in 1999 had 41 catches for 381 yards and two touchdowns in nine games this season, but had just one reception for three yards in Sunday's 41-20 loss at Kansas City.

He was considered the team's No. 1 receiver when the season began.

"This is not a knee-jerk reaction," said Coach Butch Davis in a prepared statement. "We have been trying for three seasons to help Kevin perform to the level of expectations we have for him. I am disappointed our staff has been unable to accept the expectations we have of how the wide receiver position should be played. We wish Kevin the best."

The Browns are loaded with promising young talent at wide receiver with Quincy Morgan, Dennis Northcutt, C.J. Jones, Frisman Jackson, and Andre King.

Johnson was not happy about his diminished role in the Browns' offense recently.
