QUEBEC, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Seeded players Laura Granville and Anca Barna advanced to the second Tuesday in the Bell Challenge tennis tournament.
Granville, the fourth seed, easily ousted fellow American Kristina Brandi, 6-4, 6-2. She next will take on Argentine qualifier Gisela Dulko, who upset unseeded American Sarah Taylor, 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2.
The seventh-seeded Barna, who hails from Germany, was a 7-5, 6-3 winner against Eva Fislova of Slovakia, the last player to enter the tournament.
Barna next faces Russian Alina Jidkova, who bounced American Ansley Cargill without much problem, 6-3, 6-1.
Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic defeated American Jill Craybas, 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-2, to set up a second-round contest with top seed Mary Pierce.
Pierce and second-seeded Maria Sharapova of Russia received first-round byes.
