Gordon wins Monday's Winston Cup race

HAMPTON, Ga., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Ryan Newman's crash with four laps remaining assured Jeff Gordon his 64th career victory in Monday's Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Gordon had to hold off a hard-charging Tony Stewart for his second win in as many weeks and third of the season.

Newman's Dodge was running sixth when he slid into the path of Dale Earnhardt Jr's Chevrolet. When the two cars made contact, it sent Newman's car spinning down the backstretch.

Because of NASCAR's recently implemented rule that prohibits racing back to the yellow flag, Stewart was unable to pass Gordon once the yellow light was turned on.

Gordon was followed by Stewart's Chevrolet, Jimmie Johnson's Chevy, Bill Elliott's Dodge and Bobby Labonte's Chevrolet.

Matt Kenseth, who entered the race as the Winston Cup leader by 240 points over Kevin Harvick, finished 11th. Earnhardt moved into second place.
