Mirnyi ousted by Andreev

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Top seed Rainer Schuettler advanced to the second round Wednesday, but fourth seed Max Mirnyi was eliminated from the St. Petersburg Open.

Schuettler pulled away from qualifier Jean-Rene Lisnard, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, in a first-round matchup. Schuettler had lost two of their first three meetings.

Mirnyi, however, was upset by wild card Igor Andreev, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), in their first meeting.

Also in the first round, Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who captured the inaugural St. Petersburg Open in 1995, beat Nicolas Kiefer, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Kafelnikov is searching for his first title of the season.

In second-round action, Vince Spadea, the No. 6 seed, outlasted unseeded Dominik Hrbaty, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
