NHL: Philadelphia 2, Buffalo 0

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Mark Recchi and Michal Handzus scored power-play goals in the third period Thursday night as Philadelphia opened the season by blanking Buffalo, 2-0.

Jeff Hackett, making his debut with the Flyers, had to make just 17 saves for the shutout.

Bothered by injuries during his 14-year career, Hackett was given the chance to play for a legitimate Stanley Cup contender when Philadelphia signed him as a free agent in July.

Amid much skepticism, Hackett showed in this one he is determined to prove the doubters wrong.

He was seldom tested while recording his 24th career shutout.

Recchi snapped a scoreless tie 61 seconds into the period and Handzus gave Philadelphia some breathing room five minutes later.
