NEW YORK, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Andy Pettitte won another big playoff game Thursday night, working in and out of early danger as New York downed Boston, 6-2.
The Yankees evened their American League Championship Series at one game apiece. The series resumes Saturday in Boston.
Pettitte got Kevin Millar on a bases loaded popout to end the first inning and retired Bill Mueller on a grounder with a man at third to finish the second after the Red Sox had scored a run.
Over the first two innings, Pettitte allowed six hits and a walk, but was aided by two double plays.
After escaping those problems and being staked to a 2-1 lead on Nick Johnson's two-run homer in the second, Pettitte retired 13 of 15 batters.
Pettitte improved to 6-1 in the ALCS with his 12th career playoff win, one behind the record of Atlanta's John Smoltz.
