Dolphins bring back Matt Turk

DAVIE, Fla., Sept. 29 (UPI) -- The Miami Dolphins, unhappy with Mark Royals, Monday brought back Matt Turk to handle the punting duties.

Turk, who played for Miami in 2000 and 2001, signed a one-year contract.

He spent last season with the New York Jets, averaging just 41.0 yards and netted 34.9 yards per kick. He was released in March and did not hook up with a team in training camp.

The 35-year-old Turk has averaged 42.9 yards per punt over eight NFL seasons.

"The position is not just punting, but also holding for field goals with (placekicker) Olindo (Mare)," said Coach Dave Wannstedt. "Matt had a very good workout. The punting was not an issue. I think the comfort zone, as far as his holding for Olindo, we didn't feel like we were losing a lot there. That's what brought on the move."

Royals, 37, averaged just 40.2 yards in Miami's first three games. His average of 40.2 yards last season, his first with the Dolphins, was the worst of his 13-year career.
