N.Y. Yankees 3, Baltimore 1

NEW YORK, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- David Wells recorded his 200th career win Sunday as the New York Yankees beat Baltimore, 3-1.

Wells gave up one run over 7 2/3 innings, and Mariano Rivera recorded his 40th save, polishing off the five-hitter.

Wells (15-7) became the 99th pitcher and the 24th lefthander to reach 200 victories. The former Oriole did not walk a batter, struck out one, and got a mild surprise when teammate Roger Clemens came out to remove him in the eighth.

Clemens, a 300-game winner, was serving as acting manager.

New York, which opens postseason play Tuesday against Minnesota at Yankee Stadium, won its 101st game of the season. The Yankees also set a single-season franchise attendance record, falling just shy of 3.5 million fans.

Baltimore completed a 71-91 campaign and likely played its last game under Manager Mike Hargrove, whose contract expired at the end of the season. The Orioles were 67-95 last year.
