Hernandez reaches second round

PALERMO, , Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Oscar Hernandez, a three-time winner on the Challenger Tour this year, upset David Sanchez Wednesday at the International Championships of Sicily.

Hernandez reached the second round with a 6-2, 0-6, 7-6 (10-8) victory over the third seed, improving his season ATP record to 3-3. He was coming off his third Challenger title of the season in Tehran.

Hernandez will face qualifier Tomas Tenconi in the second round. He could meet top seed Nicolas Massu of Chile in the semifinals.

Massu moved into the third round when Jose Acasuso of Argentina retired with a hip injury trailing 6-2, 3-1. Massu is seeking his second title of the season.

Massu plays Spaniard Albert Montanes in the third round. Montanes disposed of German Tomas Behrend, 6-0, 6-4.

Also Wednesday, fourth seed Filippo Volandri ousted Francesco Aldi, 6-2, 7-5, and Victor Hanescu downed Igor Andreev, 6-3, 6-3.
