Roddick withdraws from at Thailand Open

BANGKOK, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- World No. 2 Andy Roddick of the United States was forced to withdraw Monday from the Thailand Open due to a right hamstring injury.

The U.S. Open champion and tour leader in titles with six, Roddick suffered the injury Friday in his loss to Dominik Hrbaty in the United States' Davis Cup tie against Slovakia. He played hurt Sunday against Karol Beck, clinching the tie with a straight-sets victory.

Croatian Ivan Ljubicic, the sixth seed, overcame France's Cyril Saulnier, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) while teenage countryman Mario Antic, teenager got past Swiss qualifier Marco Chiudinelli, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

In the only other main draw singles match, German Alexander Popp defeated Austrian Werner Eschauer, 7-5, 6-3.

World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain heads the field after helping Spain advance to the Davis Cup final.
