Romero leads Omega European Masters

CRANS-SUR-SIERRE, Switzerland, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Seeking to become the oldest winner in a European Tour event, 49-year-old Argentine Eduardo Romero is two shots ahead of Ernie Els at the Omega European Masters.

Romero, who turned 49 on July 17, fired a 4-under-par 67 for the second straight day Saturday and is at 13-under 198. He is seeking his first victory since the 2002 Scottish Open.

Ireland's Des Smyth was 48 years, 34 days old when he won the Madeira Island Open in 2001.

Els had a 68 Saturday and at 11-under 202 is one shot ahead of defending champion Robert Karlsson of Sweden. Els, 33, is seeking his sixth victory of the season.
