Sorenstam to play in Skins Game

LAQUINTA, Calif., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Swedish superstar Annika Sorenstam will become the first woman to compete in the Skins Game, it was announced Tuesday.

Six months after becoming the first woman to play in a PGA Tour event in 60 years, Sorenstam will join Fred Couples, Phil Mickelson and Mark O'Meara in the $1 million event to be played Thanksgiving weekend at the Trilogy Golf Club.

"The entire country was captivated by not only Annika's play at Colonial but her poise," said ESPN executive vice president and general manager Chuck Gerber. "We are thrilled to have her make Skins Game history this year and we couldn't be happier that she has decided to play."

O'Meara is the defending champion and Couples is the all-time leading money winner in the Skins Game competition.
