NEW YORK, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Top seed and two-time champion Andre Agassi crushed Spain's Alex Corretja, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the U.S. Open.
American Grand Slam winner Michael Chang played the final match of his career, a 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 loss to No. 15 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile and walked off to a standing ovation.
Agassi, 33, plans to do his celebrating on championship Sunday. He needed only 86 minutes to snap a three-match losing streak to the former top-five player.
Agassi started the year by winning the Australian Open for his eighth Grand Slam title. Runner-up at last year's final to Sampras, he improved to 63-15 lifetime at the Open.
French Open champion Justin Henin-Hardenne, eighth-seeded Rainer Schuettler and No. 11 Paradorn Srichaphan had their struggles but advanced to the second round.
