Pooley pulls away at Allianz Championship

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Don Pooley pulled away Sunday for a three-stroke victory at the Senior PGA Allianz Championship.

Baseball veteran Rick Rhoden had grabbed the lead before bogeying three consecutive holes on the back nine.

Continuing his comeback from shoulder surgery, Pooley fired a 4-under-par 67 to close the 54-hole tournament at 13-under 200. His eagle at the par-5 11th hole gave him a two-shot edge.

Pooley led by as many as four strokes before getting his second win in 44 career Champions Tour starts. His first came at last year's U.S. Open in a five-hole playoff with Tom Watson.

Seven months after undergoing surgery for a torn ligament in his left shoulder, Pooley earned the $225,000 top prize. He had made only $82,502 in his first seven starts of the year.
