NEW YORK, July 25 (UPI) -- The New York Rangers added some toughness Friday by signing unrestricted free agent left wing Chris Simon.

He has accumulated over 1,300 penalty minutes in his career.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

It is the second offseason signing for the Rangers, who also inked defenseman Greg de Vries as they try to snap a franchise-worst six-year playoff drought.

Simon, 31, fits into the mold of Sandy McCarthy, a valuable member of the Rangers the last couple of seasons who can score and defend his teammates. He had 12 goals and 148 penalty minutes last season.

Simon spent 2002-03 between Washington and Chicago. He was dealt early in the season to the Blackhawks in a trade that sent Michael Nylander and two draft picks to the Capitals.

In 11 NHL seasons with the Caps and Quebec-Colorado franchise, he has 108 goals, 117 assists, and 1,346 penalty minutes.

The 6-4, 235-pounder also has appeared in 51 playoff games, winning the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 1996.
