Rams dump Wilkins, Covington

ST. LOUIS, July 22 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Rams have made a couple of early training camp roster cuts, wide receiver Terrence Wilkins and backup quarterback Scott Covington.

Despite a big sideline blowup with Coach Mike Martz late last season and his disappointing performance, he had been listed in the offseason as the team's No. 3 wideout. The signing of fourth-round pick Shaun McDonald in the draft in April made Wilkins expendable.

Wilkins, who did not play in the last three games in 2002, was seen buying a hot dog at halftime of the season finale, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

"Terrence's situation is obviously one of those things that didn't work out," Martz told the paper.

He caught only five passes for 31 yards last season.

The paper said by releasing Wilkins, more a kick returner, the Rams save his $530,000 salary for 2003.

He was acquired from Indianapolis in 2002 for a draft pick.

In a reserve role, Covington was 2-of-5 for seven yards.
