Although he is only 28, Prospal qualified for unrestricted free agency as a 10-year veteran who was making below the average NHL salary. He was paid $1.55 million by the Tampa Bay Lightning last season, when he led the team in scoring with 22 goals and a career-high 57 assists in 80 games.

Playing on a line with Vincent Lecavalier and All-Star Martin St. Louis, Prospal tied the single-season team assists record and was 15th in the league in scoring.
