PALERMO, Italy, July 10 (UPI) -- Third seed Francesca Schiavone was an easy winner Thursday in the second round of the Palermo Open.
The highest seed remaining, Schiavone had no trouble with Italian compatriot Adriana Serra Zanetti, coasting to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.
Top seed Magui Serna of Spain and No. 2 Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic were eliminated in second-round matches earlier this week.
Schiavone will play ninth seed Dinara Safina of Russia, who defeated Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg, 7-5, 6-4.
Seventh seed Emilie Loit of France was ousted by Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-2. Nagyova's quarterfinal opponent will be fellow Slovakian Ludmilia Cervanova, who defeated Serna on Wednesday.
In Thursday's other match, Yuliana Fedak of Ukraine defeated Renata Voracova of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
