Boston 3, Detroit 1

BOSTON, June 23 (UPI) -- Tim Wakefield pitched into the seventh inning before leaving with an injury Monday and the Boston Red Sox took a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Wakefield (6-3) won for the first time in four starts, allowing four hits over six-plus scoreless innings. The knuckleballer walked two and struck out five but was forced to leave with a strained back after throwing one pitch in the seventh.

Alan Embree worked two hitless innings and Mike Timlin gave up a run and two hits in a the ninth for his second save.

Kevin Millar had an RBI single in the sixth to give Boston a 2-0 lead and added a solo homer in the eighth for a three-run cushion.

Tigers starter Jeremy Bonderman (2-11) surrendered two runs and eight hits in six innings. The rookie righthander struck out two without a walk.
