Vizquel has knee surgery

CLEVELAND, June 12 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Indians Thursday placed shortstop Omar Vizquel on the 15-day disabled list because of a torn MCL in his right knee.

He opted for surgery on the injury, which was performed Thursday morning by team physician Dr. Louis Keppler at Lutheran Hospital.

Vizquel, on the DL for the fourth time in his career, is expected to be sidelined 3-6 weeks. He is batting .255 with two homers and 18 RBI while scoring a team-high 40 runs.

He believes he suffered the injury sliding into the plate Friday against Arizona, but it was not disclosed until after Wednesday's 3-2 victory over San Diego.

Vizquel, a nine-time Gold Glove Award winner, has played in at least 151 games in six of the last seven seasons.

To take his roster spot, the Indians recalled infielder John Peralta from Triple-A Buffalo of the International League.

Peralta, 21, will be making his major league debut after spending the entire season at Buffalo.
