DOVER, Del., May 30 (UPI) -- NASCAR Winston Cup regular Joe Nemechek set a track qualifying record Friday and won the pole for the Busch Series MBNA Armed Forces Family 200 at Dover International Speedway.
Driving a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Nemechek covered the one-mile track in 22.967 seconds at an average speed of 156.747 miles per hour.
Nemechek, nicknamed "Front-row Joe" for his ability to gain the pole position, earned the top spot in a Busch race for the 16th time since 1992.
Kasey Kahne averaged 155.750 mph in a Ford and will start alongside Nemechek on Saturday. Kahne has qualified in the top 10 in 11 of the 14 Busch Series races.
Winston Cup points leader Matt Kenseth turned a lap in 23.133 seconds with a speed of 155.622 to take the third position.
Scott Riggs and Casey Mears rounded out the top five.
Riggs has jumped from ninth to third in the series in a span of four races, thanks to three top-five finishes, including his first victory of the year at St. Louis on May 10.
