Suarez, Tulyaganova advance in Madrid

MADRID, May 19 (UPI) -- No. 5 Paola Suarez of Argentina had an easy route to the second round at the Madrid Open Monday as American Sarah Taylor retired with an injury.

Suarez was up 6-2, 3-0 when Taylor decided she could no longer continue.

Seventh seeded Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan, making her debut at this event, advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Flavia Pennetta of Italy.

Austria's Barbara Schett bounced Rita Grande of Italy, 6-3, 6-2; American Amy Frazier needed three sets to dispose of Akiko Morigami of Japan, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-1; and Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain defeated Australian Nicole Pratt, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Some of the notables entered in this red clay event ahead of next week's French Open include Americans Chanda Rubin and Alexandra Stevenson - both receiving first round byes as the top two seeds. Crowd favorite Conchita Martinez, who received a wild card, is seeded third. Martinez won this event in 1991 and is making her first appearance at her home tournament since 1996.
