Philadelphia 5, San Diego 4 (10 innings)

SAN DIEGO, May 4 (UPI) -- David Bell had a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning and Jose Mesa retired the San Diego Padres on just nine pitches in the bottom half Saturday night to nail down the Philadelphia Phillies' 5-4 victory.

It was just the third time this season Mesa needed fewer than 10 pitches to post a save and fifth time in 14 appearances he did not put a runner on base.

He got Sean Burroughs on a first-pitch groundout, set down Keith Lockhart on a flyout and pinch hitter Brian Buchanan on a popout for his eighth save in 10 chances.

Mesa moved past Tug McGraw with his 95th save in a Philadelphia uniform. Only Steve Bedrosian (103) and Mitch Williams (102) have more saves for the Phillies.

Mesa came on after the Phillies pushed across a run in the 10th against Jaret Wright (1-4), who walked Bobby Abreu and gave up a single to Mike Lieberthal. Lefthander Jesse Orosco retired Jim Thome on a groundout that moved Abreu to third and San Diego Manager Bruce Bochy summoned Matt Herges, who gave up Bell's sacrifice fly.
