Randriantefy advances at Amelia Island

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla., April 15 (UPI) -- For the second week in a row on Monday, Dally Randriantefy of Madagascar won her first-round match but advanced to a meeting with the top seed.

Randriantefy beat Sarah Taylor of the United States, 6-4, 6-4, in opening-round action at the $585,000 Bausch & Lomb Championships.

She next faces top-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium, who handed world No. 1 Serena Williams her first loss of the season Sunday in the final of the Family Circle Cup.

Last week, Randriantefy lost to Williams, 6-3, 6-0, in the second round.

The top 16 seeds at this event received first-round byes.

Nicole Pratt of Australia also secured a tough second-round meeting when she rallied past Bea Bielik of the United States, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0. Pratt will face No. 2 Lindsay Davenport on Tuesday, but is 0-3 lifetime against the 1997 champion.

Last week, Davenport lost in the semifinals to Williams.

Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian of Switzerland cruised past Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-4, and next will square off with the third seed, Jennifer Capriati of the United States, who missed last week's tournament while battling strep throat.

Three qualifiers reached the second round as Akiko Morigami of Japan routed Evie Dominikovic of Australia, 6-2, 6-2; Julia Vakulenko of Ukraine topped American Amy Frazier, 6-2, 6-4; and Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela beat Marion Bartoli of France, 7-5, 6-0.

Jill Craybas defeated fellow American Milagros Sequera, a qualifier, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, but countrywoman Laura Granville was a 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-1 loser to Vera Zvonareva.

Zvonareva, 18, reached her second Tier I quarterfinal of the year in Charleston.

Also, Anca Barna of Germany bested Iroda Tulyaganova of Ukraine, 6-0, 7-5; Tathiana Garbin of Italy overcame American wild card Shenay Perry, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2; Elena Likhovtseva of Russia thrashed Stephanie Foretz of France, 6-1, 6-2; and Els Callens of Belgium posted a 6-7 (10-12), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory over Zimbabwe's Cara Black.

First prize at this Tier II claycourt event is $93,000.
