Montreal 7, Chicago Cubs 1

CHICAGO, April 10 (UPI) -- Vladimir Guerrero homered, drove in three runs and scored twice as the Montreal Expos salvaged the finale of their three-game series with the Chicago Cubs, 7-1, Thursday.

The Expos managed a total of one run and eight hits in the first two games of the series but got off to a hot start in this one, taking advantage of three Cubs errors in the first inning - two by starter Shawn Estes (0-1) - to score four runs.

Guerrero staked Tony Armas Jr. to a 5-0 advantage with a second-inning single that plated Jose Macias, then added a two-run homer to left field against Juan Cruz in the sventh.

With five hits through two innings Thursday, the Expos eclipsed by one their total against Mark Prior in a 3-0 loss on Wednesday.

Armas (2-1), who yielded three hits in seven scoreless innings, struck out a career-high 11 batters en route to

defeating the Cubs for the first time in six starts. He and two relievers combined for 14 strikeouts to bring the team's two-game total to a team-record 29.

Armas and Javier Vazquez, who had a career-best 14 srikeouts in a 3-0 loss on Wednesday, became the first Expos

starters to record back-to-back double-digit strikeouts since Carlos Perez and Pedro Martinez on August 13-14, 1997.
