NY Mets 4, Montreal 0

NEW YORK, April 4 (UPI) -- Pitching for the first time in 17 months, David Cone allowed two hits in five frosty innings Friday night as the New York Mets dealt the Montreal Expos their first loss of the season, 4-0.

An outside shot to make the rotation as a non-roster player in spring training, Cone (1-0) struck out five, including Vladimir Guerrero with the bases loaded to end the third inning.

Vance Wilson, filling in for suspended catcher Mike Piazza, provided all the offense Cone needed with a two-run double in the fourth inning. Mo Vaughn added an RBI single and a solo homer for New York.

The Expos, who play most of their home games in a dome and the others in Puerto Rico, looked more ready for a polar expedition than for a baseball game on a misty night with near-freezing temperatures. Several players wore neck warmers and pulled turtlenecks over their faces.

Shortstop Orlando Cabrera brought a hand-warmer with him into the field.

Tomo Ohka (0-1), who wore a heavy winter coat while running the bases, allowed three runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.
