McPherson leaves Murray St.

MURRAY, Ky., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Former Florida State quarterback Adrian McPherson, who is facing felony charges for allegedly stealing a blank check, has withdrawn from Murray State, the school announced Wednesday.

On Nov. 27, McPherson was arrested and charged with a felony and misdemeanor for taking a blank check from an auto accessories company in Tallahassee, Fla. The check later was made out for $3,500 and cashed, and two more felony charges were added by prosecutors last week.

Two days before his arrest, McPherson was kicked off the Florida State team by coach Bobby Bowden.

McPherson, a sophomore, enrolled at Murray State, a Division I-AA program, in January and would have been eligible next season. But the school would not allow him to play until he straightened out his legal problems.

"We told Adrian when he got here in January that he could not play football until his legal issues were resolved," Murray State Athletic Director E.W. Dennison said. "Since that time more charges were added and I think he realized his football career would be put on hold indefinitely."

Dennison said the school conducted its own investigation and deemed McPherson worthy of acceptance into the institution. He was enrolled in good academic standing.

"We felt Adrian deserved a second chance to resume his education and, hopefully, his athletic career, but the situation did not work out for him at Murray State," Coach Joe Pannunzio said.
