Arizona State 27; Washington 16

TEMPE, Ariz., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Andrew Walter, who threw for a Pac-10 Conference-record 536 yards last week, passed for only 184 yards this Saturday night, but led No. 25 Arizona State to a 27-16 win over slumping Washington.

Walter, coming off a record-setting performance against Oregon, completed 18-of-27 passes, and had two touchdown passes without an interception as the Sun Devils handed the Huskies a sixth consecutive road defeat, dating back to last season's Holiday Bowl loss to Texas in San Diego.

Hakim Hill got Arizona State (7-2, 4-0 Pac-10) on the board with a one-yard run with 8:06 left in the first quarter, then caught a six-yard pass from Walter with nine seconds remaining in the period to make it 14-0.

Walter connected on a 15-yard scoring toss to Shaun McDonald five minutes into the second quarter to make it 21-3. The Sun Devils extended their advantage to 27-3 on two field goals by Mike Barth early in the fourth quarter before the Huskies added two late scores.

"They physically outplayed us, especially on the defensive front," said Washington Coach Rick Neuheisel. "It made it a long night for our offense."

Cody Pickett was 18-of-37 for 210 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Washington (4-4, 1-3 Pac-10), which lost for the third time in four games.

It was the first time this season that Pickett did not throw for at least 300 yards. Prior to this season, no Husky quarterback had thrown for 300 yards in more than two straight games.

Arizona State now is tied with Washington State atop the Pac-10. They are the only undefeated teams in the conference and clash next week in Pullman.

"We have a big game next week against Washington State up at their place on ABC," Hill said. "We will start thinking about them on Tuesday. We just want to enjoy this one tonight."

Sun Devils defensive end Terrell Suggs had 4 1/2 sacks to increase his season total to 17 1/2, tying the NCAA record set last year by Dwight Freeney of Syracuse. The NCAA has only kept the statistic since 2000, and Suggs actually is 1 1/2 sacks shy of tying the team record of Al Harris.

"I kind of fell into it," Suggs said. "I really wasn't shooting for it. The team goal is not for me to break the record. The team goal is to go to the Rose Bowl, and I bought into that."

Neither team rushed the ball well, with Washington gaining only 42 yards on 38 carries and Arizona State 45 on 37.
