Texas 27, North Texas 0

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Chris Simms threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score Saturday night as No. 2 Texas recorded a 27-0 victory over North Texas.

Simms, who has failed to live up to lofty expectations, began his senior by getting sacked seven times, resulting in losses of 37 yards, but he completed 16 of 26 passes for 187 yards.

While not overpowering, Texas (1-0) won for the eighth time in its last nine games.

With three minutes left in the first quarter, Simms ran for a one-yard score, giving the Longhorns a 14-0 lead. Eleven minutes later, he hooked up with Brock Edwards for a 15-yard touchdown pass to give Texas a 21-point cushion.

North Texas (0-1) dropped its sixth straight season opener and has not won an opener on the road since 1988 against Texas Tech.

Scott Hall threw for just 35 yards for the Mean Green, completing just four of 13 passes.
