Tampa Bay 8, Texas 3

ARLINGTON, Texas, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Chris Gomez and Jared Sandberg each drove in three runs and Lance Carter notched his first career save Sunday night as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays defeated the Texas Rangers, 8-3, completing their first series sweep since taking three games from Detroit to open the season.

Gomez stroked a three-run triple in the eighth inning after Sandberg belted his 17th homer, a three-run shot in the fourth, to give Tampa Bay its fourth three-game winning streak of the campaign.

The team's longest streak has been four in a row from May 18-22.

Victor Zambrano (6-6) pitched six strong innings for the win, allowing two runs and eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

A veteran of six major league games, Carter worked the final three frames, yielding a run and three hits while walking one and striking out two. In 1999, Carter was 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in six appearances with Kansas City.

Texas starter Dennys Reyes (2-2) struggled, surrendering four runs and five hits in just 4 2/3 innings. The lefthander walked two and struck out three.

Ivan Rodriguez hit his fourth homer in five games in the sixth inning, extending the Rangers' streak of consecutive games with a home run to 19, two shy of the team record.
