LANDOVER, Md., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Damon Huard passed for two touchdowns and the New England Patriots' defense played well Thursday night en route to a 28-14 victory over the Washington Redskins.
In his first season as Redskins coach, Steve Spurrier's "Fun n' Gun' offense had been in high gear. Washington won its first four games, averaging 37.5 points per contest.
But against defensive wiz Bill Belichick, the Redksins' first-team offense was shut down in the opening half, when New England raced to a 21-0 lead.
Danny Wuerffel played the first half for the Redskins and was ineffective, going seven of 13 for 58 yards.
With reserves littering the field, the Redskins got a touchdown passes from Shane Matthews and first-round pick Patrick Ramsey in the second half.
Washington (4-1) opens its regular season on Sept. 8 at home against Arizona.
Huard threw touchdown passes of 13 and two yards to Daniel Graham, the Patriots' first-round pick, in the second quarter.
New England (2-2) plays the first Monday night game of the season when it hosts Pittsburgh in a rematch of the AFC championship game on Sept. 9.
