Broncos RB Terrell Davis to retire

DENVER, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis, who has been limited to 17 games over the last three seasons due to an assortment of injuries, apparently has decided to retire.

The Denver Post reported Sunday that Davis will be placed on the injured reserve list on Tuesday, officially ending his season and unofficially ending his career.

The Broncos host the San Francisco 49ers in a preseason game on Monday night, allowing Davis to walk in uniform through the players' tunnel and giving fans to pay tribute to one of the most dominant running backs of the 1990s. The Denver Post said that "barring a medical miracle," Davis has played his last game.

"It's tough man, don't get me wrong," Davis told the newspaper. "It's tough because I still have a lot of football left in me. But I know that my body is not going to allow me to perform at the level I want to play. Unless some new technology comes along real soon, there's a good chance I'll never see the field again."

The latest injury for Davis is a degenerative condition in his left knee.

By placing Davis on injured reserve, the Broncos will save $1.2 million against the salary cap this season.

Davis was limited to eight games last season, but still led the Broncos with 701 rushing yards on 167 carries. He was the League's MVP in 1998, rushing for 2,008 yards.

In his career, Davis has rushed for 7,607 yards on 1,655 carries in 78 games. He has averaged 4.6 yards per carry and scored 60 touchdowns. A sixth-round draft choice out of Georgia in 1995, Davis holds or shares 56 team records, including 21 in the postseason.
