SAN DIEGO, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- The San Diego Chargers posted a 24-14 exhibition victory over the Seattle Seahawks Friday night but did not resolve their quarterback issue, sat their star running back for the second straight game and again played without their top draft pick.
Second-year signal-caller Drew Brees started and completed 6-of-11 passes for 47 yards. He was replaced by veteran Doug Flutie, last year's starter who was 8-of-13 for 102 yards and an interception. Flutie also had three carries for 31 yards.
With 48 seconds left in the first quarter, Vaughn Sanders had a one-yard touchdown run. Sanders started for LaDainian Tomlinson, who has not played in the preseason. Tomlinson had an outstanding rookie season but wore down in its latter stages.
San Diego opened a 17-7 lead on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Dave Dickenson to rookie Reche Caldwell with 5:10 left in the third quarter. Tony Okanlawon returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown in the final period.
The Chargers were without cornerback Quentin Jammer, the fifth overall pick in the 2002 draft who remains unsigned.
With starter Trent Dilfer hurt in the exhibition opener, the Seahawks went with Matt Hasselbeck, who was 3-of-6 for 35 yards and an interception. He was replaced by Michigan State rookie Ryan Van Dyke, who was 8-of-12 for 94 yards before leaving with an injury in the third period.
Seattle running back Shaun Alexander had five carries for six yards. Reserve Maurice Morris saw most of the action and carried 13 times for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
