Chi. White Sox 3, Anaheim 2

CHICAGO, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- In his first start in more than a year, Jim Parque worked 5 1/3 effective innings Thursday night as the Chicago White Sox held off the Anaheim Angels, 3-2.

Limited to five games in 2001 due to a shoulder injury, Parque began this season with the White Sox but was sent to the minor leagues after three ineffective relief appearances.

Making his first start since April 26 of last season, Parque (1-0) gave up two runs and five hits, walking three and striking out one. The lefthander won for the first time since Sept. 23, 2000.

The bullpen had plenty to do with Parque's win as four relievers combined to allow two hits over 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Damaso Marte got the final four outs for his fifth save.

Carlos Lee provided the go-ahead run for the White Sox, hitting a solo homer in the fifth off Aaron Sele (8-8) to snap a 2-2 tie.

Sele went seven innings, allowing three runs and seven hits. He walked two and struck out four.

Benji Gil hit a solo homer in the second for the Angels, who had their lead in the American League wild card race reduced to a half game over Boston.
