Texas 12, Oakland 4

ARLINGTON, Texas, July 26 (UPI) -- Carl Everett set a club record by homering twice in a nine-run seventh inning Friday night and the Texas Rangers got a 10-game homestand off on the right foot with an emphatic, 12-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

After the Rangers gave up three runs in the top of the seventh to fall behind, 4-3, Everett sent Mark Mulder's first offering of the bottom of the frame over the wall in left field to tie the contest.

Ruben Rivera followed with a home run to right center to give Texas the lead for good and the Rangers went through three more Oakland pitchers by the time Everett concluded the burst with a two-run shot to left off Mike Venafro.

In all, the two teams combined to use an American League-record eight pitchers in the 56-minute inning. The teams also tied the major league record set by the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets on Aug. 26, 1987.

The inning was the biggest for the Rangers this season.

Everett, Rafael Palmeiro and Juan Gonzalez finished with three RBI apiece as Texas also produced a season high in runs.

The Rangers tied a team record by turning five double plays. Alex Rodriguez, who had a hand in all five, tied the major league record for most double plays by a shortstop in a nine-inning game.

Rich Rodriguez (1-1) recorded just two outs but earned the victory.

Mulder (11-6) surrendered five runs and six hits in six-plus innings as the A's dropped three straight games for the first time since June 25-27.

Ray Durham went one for four with an RBI in his Oakland debut.
