Detroit 2, Pittsburgh 1

DETROIT, June 29 (UPI) -- Jeff Weaver allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings Saturday night as the Detroit Tigers edged the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-1.

In interleague games, Weaver is 9-1 in 15 career starts and this season he is 2-0 in five starts against the National League.

Weaver suffered his first career interleague loss June 7 against the Philadelphia Phillies, but in his last four interleague outings he is 2-0 with a 1.10 ERA.

The righthander did not run into trouble until there were two outs in the eighth inning when Jack Wilson, Brian Giles and Aramis Ramirez singled.

After Ramirez's base hit made it 2-1, Juan Acevedo spelled Weaver and struck out Rob Mackowiak to end the eighth. Acevedo allowed two hits in the ninth before recording his 12th save in 15 chances.

Run support has been an issue for Weaver as the Tigers have scored three runs or less in 57 of his 109 career starts. Saturday was no different.

The Tigers managed 10 hits and took advantage of a pair of miscues by Pirates catcher Jason Kendall.

In the fifth inning, Kendall dropped Ramirez's throw from third base on Wendell Magee's grounder, allowing Robert Fick to score.

Two innings later, Damion Easley scored when Kendall was charged with a passed ball with two outs.
