Montgomerie continues hot play

VIRGINIA WATER, England, May 23 (UPI) -- In between massages and doctor visits, Colin Montgomerie continues his resurgence.

Montgomerie overcame a lingering back injury Thursday, carding an 8-under-par 64 for a three-stroke lead at the Volvo PGA Championship.

After receiving intensive treatment from a specialist in Fulham, Montgomerie recorded his best round of the season, offsetting three bogeys with nine birdies and an eagle at the Wentworth Club.

"I am glad to get that under my belt," said the 36-year-old Scotsman, who won this event from 1998-2000 for three of his 26 European Tour titles. "I had the opportunities to score well today, took them, and that is very important."

Montgomerie was planning to return to Fulham after the round. He also had a massage scheduled for Thursday night and another for Friday morning before his second round.

Montgomerie was coming off his playoff loss to Tiger Woods at the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open in Germany, which ended Monday.

Andrew Coltart of Scotland, Mark McNulty of Zimbabwe, Argentina's Eduardo Romero and Steen Tinning of Denmark are tied for second after carding 67s.
