NY Yankees 6, Minnesota 2

NEW YORK, May 18 (UPI) -- Alfonso Soriano snapped a tie with a three-run homer in the sixth inning and Ted Lilly pitched seven effective innings Saturday as the New York Yankees posted a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

The teams came back 12 hours after Jason Giambi hit a dramatic grand slam in the bottom of the 14th inning to give the Yankees a 13-12 victory in a five-hour, 46-minute marathon in rainy conditions.

On Saturday, the game time temperature was 44 degrees, but that didn't cool off the Yankees, who won for the 10th time in their last 11 games and beat the Twins for the fifth time in as many meetings.

Soriano struck out in his first three at-bats against Tony Fiore (2-1), who made his first major league start. But with runners on first and third and none out in the sixth inning, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire lifted Fiore in favor of Bob Wells and Soriano greeted the reliever with his second three-run homer in as many days, giving the Yankees a 5-2 lead.

Lilly (1-3) allowed just one earned run and five hits and tied a season-high with nine strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.
