Kansas City 4, Cleveland 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 12 (UPI) -- Activated from the disabled list before the game, Mark Quinn hit a two-run double in his first at-bat of the season to highlight a four-run first inning Sunday as the Kansas City Royals posted a 4-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

Paul Byrd (6-2) allowed one run, a solo homer by Jim Thome, in six innings to earn the victory. He has half of Kansas City's 12 wins this season.

Cory Bailey, Jason Grimsley and Roberto Hernandez combined for three innings of hitless relief against the Indians, who managed just four runs in the rain-shortened three-game series. It was the third save in as many chances for Hernandez.

The Royals swept a three-game series in Cleveland from April 15-17, 1994 but had not swept the Indians at Kauffman Stadium since July 26-28, 1985.

Cleveland starter Chuck Finley (2-4) walked three and gave up three hits in the opening inning, when the Royals scored all of their runs.

Neifi Perez doubled with one out and Finley walked Mike Sweeney and Carlos Beltran to load the bases and set the stage for Quinn, who went the other way and doubled off the right field wall to give the Royals a 2-0 lead.

Sidelined since spring training with a fractured rib, Quinn served as the designated hitter. He has been productive the last two seasons, combining for 37 homers and 138 RBI in 253 games.

Unnerved, Finley walked rookie Brandon Berger to reload the bases. A.J. Hinch, who homered in each of the first two games of the series, followed with a bloop single to right-center and Quinn scored the final run of the inning on a groundout by Donnie Sadler.
