Pittsburgh 3; Arizona 2

PHOENIX, May 7 (UPI) -- Randy Johnson lost Monday night for the first time in seven decisions this season as the Arizona Diamondbacks fell, 3-2, to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a three-game series at Bank One Ballpark.

Johnson (6-1) gave up three runs, two earned, and seven hits over seven innings. He walked none and struck out eight, but was charged with his first loss since Aug. 23, 2001, a 5-1 setback, also to the Pirates. Including the postseason, the veteran lefthander lost for the first time in 12 decisions, and missed the chance to become the first seven-game winner in the majors this year.

The four-time Cy Young Award winner, whose 6-0 pre-May start matched the major league record held by Vida Blue and Dave Stewart, had missed his last scheduled start because of a lower back strain. He fell to 7-4 lifetime against the Pirates.

Brian Giles homered in the first inning and rookie Josh Fogg bounced back from his first loss of the season with six solid innings for Pittsburgh.
