Rain dampens Porto tennis action

PORTO, Portugal, April 2 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Angeles Montolio of Spain needed just one more game to advance into the second round of the $140,000 Porto Ladies Open Tuesday, but rain prevented her from doing so.

Montolio led compatriot Eva Bes, 6-3, 5-2, when rain interrupted play. Before the rains came, Spanish qualifier Lourdes Dominguez Lino posted the upset of the day by beating countrywoman, Cristina Torrens Valero, the second seed, 6-3, 6-4.

Dominguez Lino will meet Cara Black of Zimbabwe in the second round. Black needed three sets to eliminate Germany's Martina Muller, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.

No. 5 Tina Pisnik of Slovenia did not even take the court against unseeded Hungarian Zsofia Gubacsi, while sixth-seeded Eleni Daniilidou of Greece led Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain, 6-3, 3-2, before running off the court.

Those matches will be completed Wednesday along with a pair of other first-round contests in addition to scheduled second-rounders.

Qualifier Kaia Kanepi of Estonia will await the winner of Montoya-Bes for a second-round matchup. Kanepi beat fellow Italian qualifier Valentina Sassi, 6-3, 6-2.

Three other matches pitting unseeded players were completed Tuesday.

Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia rolled past wild card entry Frederica Piedade of Portugal, 6-0, 6-2; Frenchwoman Emilie Loit rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Maria Jose Martinez of Spain; and qualifier Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia came from a set down to beat Celine Beigbeder, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
