Penguins claim Jeff Toms

PITTSBURGH, March 16 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins, trying to avoid missing the playoffs for the first time since 1990, Saturday claimed center Jeff Toms off waivers from the New York Rangers.

Toms had seven goals and four assists in 38 games with the Rangers this season. The 27-year-old also played nine games with Hartford of the American Hockey League, recording six goals and six assists.

The 6-5 Toms has 18 goals and 31 assists in 215 career games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders and Rangers.

Pittsburgh (26-31-6-4) is 12th in the Eastern Conference, six points from the eighth and final playoff spot. The Penguins have been hampered by injuries to Mario Lemieux, Robert Lang, Martin Straka and Alexei Kovalev. Lemieux is out for the season with a hip injury.
