Montreal 12, St. Louis 1

JUPITER, Fla., March 3 (UPI) -- Lee Stevens drove in six runs on a grand slam and pair of singles Sunday, leading the Montreal Expos to a 12-1 Grapefruit League victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Stevens reached starter Rick Ankiel for a grand slam in the bottom of the first, then added RBI singles in the second and third.

Montreal put away the game early, scoring four runs in the first, one in the second and seven in the third.

Javier Vazquez tossed three scoreless innings to earn the victory, allowing only one hit. Andy Ferrari and Joe Davenport each tossed perfect innings in relief for the Expos.

St. Louis manager Tony La Russa has said that Ankiel could earn earn a spot in the rotation. But the lefthander, who spent most of last season in the minor leagues due to excessive wildness, endured a rough outing in his spring debut.

Ankiel failed to retire any of the first four batters he faced and surrendered five runs and six hits over two innings. He walked two and struck out one.
