United goaltender to have surgery

CHANTILLY, Va., Jan. 31 (UPI) -- D.C. United goalkeeper Mike Ammann will undergo further surgery on his right elbow and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight months, the club announced Thursday.

Ammann, who turns 31 next month, missed United's last three games of the 2001 season due to ulnar nerve transposition in both elbows. Ammann previously had undergone surgery to correct the problem, but still has numbness in his right hand.

"This is an unfortunate setback for Mike, but we are hopeful that he will be able to make a full recovery," United technical director Dave Kasper said. "D.C. United has searched to find the best medical advice available to deal with this situation."

Ammann recorded a 3-14-2 mark and a 1.97 goals-against average in 19 games last season.
