Vancouver 5, Pittsburgh 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Artem Chubarov scored to cap a three-goal first period and Trevor Letowski registered two assists as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 5-2, for their fourth win in six games.

Recalled from the minors early last month, Chubarov scored his first goal of the season with 4:48 left in the period to give Vancouver a 3-0 lead. Alone in the left faceoff circle, he collected a pass from Letowski and beat goaltender Johan Hedberg just to the right of his blocker.

Defenseman Mattias Ohlund, Matt Cooke, Trevor Linden and Daniel Sedin scored the other goals for the Canucks and Dan Cloutier made 21 saves to move over .500 at 18-17-3.

It was Vancouver's first home win over the Penguins since Oct. 26, 1996, ending an 0-2-1 streak.

Mario Lemieux scored his first goal since Oct. 23 for Pittsburgh, which is 0-2 since the captain returned from a nagging hip injury.
