Los Angeles 3, NY Islanders 0

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Felix Potvin made 28 saves in his first shutout of the season and Eric Belanger scored twice in the third period Saturday night as the Los Angeles Kings downed the New York Islanders, 3-0.

With the game scoreless and just over eight minutes gone in the third period, Belanger beat Islanders goaltender Chris Osgood on the Kings' 27th shot of the game. Mattias Norstrom dropped the puck for Belanger at the top of the right faceoff circle and he was able to beat Osgood to the glove side with a wrist shot.

Belanger added his eighth goal of the season with a shorthanded empty-net goal with 2:03 left. Belanger and Bryan Smolinski executed a perfect give-and-go after a fanned shot by Shawn Bates.

Smolinski, a former Islander, scored on the power play with 7:23 left in the game. Taking a pass from Jaroslav Modry, Smolinski caught a break when his slap shot was deflected in front by Islanders defenseman Adrian Aucoin.

Potvin, another former Islander, picked up his 11th win of the season and 20th career shutout. He improved to 5-2 all time against his former team.

Osgood kept the Kings at bay through two period and finished with 32 saves.

The Islanders had 14 shots in the first period and 12 in the third but put just two pucks on net in the second.
