Davenport wins easily at Munich

MUNICH, Germany, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Lindsay Davenport extended her tour winning streak to 13 matches Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-3 dismantling of Amanda Coetzer in the opening round of the season-ending Sanex Championships.

No. 4 Justine Henin of Belgium also cruised into the quarterfinals of this $3 million indoor event with a win over Germany's Anke Huber, who was playing in the final match of her career. Huber announced her retirement shortly after the match.

Third seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium and sixth seed Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia also advanced on Tuesday.

Davenport, seeded second this week, continued her red-hot form. The American has won three titles in as many weeks, lifting the Porsche Grand Prix, Swisscom Challenge and Generali Ladies Open trophies.

The 25-year-old California native claimed her tour-best seventh title of 2001 and the 37th of her career with last week's victory at the Generali tournament in Linz, Austria.

Davenport recorded five aces and broke Coetzer's serve five times to beat the South African for the 11th time in their 14 career encounters.

Davenport also reached the finals at Sydney, Stanford and New Haven. She has not lost before the quarterfinals of any of her 17 tournaments this year, despite missing three months in the middle of the season with a right knee bone bruise.

Henin routed Huber, 6-1, 6-2, defeating the veteran for the third time in as many meetings this year. The teenager also got the best of Huber at Wimbledon in July and at Filderstadt earlier this month.

Making her debut at the Sanex Championships, Henin broke into the top 10 this year with triumphs at the Australian Women's Hardcourt Championships, Canberra International and Heineken Trophy. She also moved into the finals at Wimbledon, the Big Island Championships and the Porsche Grand Prix.

Huber finished her final season with a 35-20 record. Germany's No. 1 women's tennis player has stated she is leaving the tour after 13 years because she is tired of the repetitive nature the WTA Tour and wanted a "normal life."

Huber, 26, is currently 19th in the WTA rankings and has reached the final at the Paris Indoor and Strasbourg International events.

A winner of 12 career WTA titles, Huber played her lone Grand Slam final in the 1996 Australian Open, losing to Monica Seles, 6-4, 6-1. Huber also advanced to the semifinals of the 1993 French Open and 1998 Australian Open.

In 1995, Huber advanced to the final of the season-ending tour championships.

Henin will face American Serena Williams in the quarterfinals. The seventh seed made a successful debut at the Sanex Championships with a convincing win over Silvia Farina-Elia of Italy on Tuesday. Williams qualified in 1999 and 2000 but pulled out with a back injury and a foot ailment, respectively.

Clijsters won her third match of the year against Dementiev, posting a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory.

A year ago, Clijsters benefitted for Williams' withdrawl, upsetting Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario before losing to Dementieva in the quarterfinals.

This year, Clijsters will meet Sanchez-Vicario in the quarterfinals, once again.

Clijsters won her third title of the year on Sunday, trouncing Lisa Raymond of the United States in the final of the Seat Open at Luxembourg.

The teenager captured her second title in Luxembourg, claiming her first career tournament victory here as a qualifier in 1999.

She also won the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, California in July and the Sparkassen Cup in Leipzig, Germany in September. Clijsters has triumphed in her last three finals after losing her previous three championship matches in 2001.

Dokic overcame a first-set tiebreak to get past Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

The 18-year-old has been at the top of her game lately. Dokic won her third title of the year earlier this month at the Kremlin Cup. She also captured the Italian Open crown in May and the Princess Cup at Tokyo last month.

Dokic's only two losses in her last 14 matches have come against Davenport, her quarterfinal opponent.

This is the first year the tour championship is being held in Munich after a 23-year stint at Madison Square Garden in New York. The event features an elite 16-player field but is without some of the WTA's top stars.

Hingis, the reigning champion, is out after undergoing ankle surgery two weeks ago, and Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion Venus Williams of the United States has a wrist injury.

In addition, American Monica Seles, last year's runner-up and a three-time winner, has vowed not to play in Germany since the country's courts released the man who stabbed her with a knife in 1993.
